Know when a competitor changes its pricing

Cedric checks your competitors' pricing and changelog pages on a schedule and posts what changed in Slack, each change with its source and the day he read it.

  • Slack
  • Notion

Competitors rarely announce a price change. The pricing page changes one night, and you hear about it from a prospect who mentions the cheaper plan on a sales call.

For a small team, competitor monitoring mostly comes down to one question asked often: did anyone change what they charge, or what they ship? This post sets up that one check. Cedric reads your competitors' pricing and changelog pages every week and tells the channel what moved. When nothing did, he stays quiet.

  • Name the competitors and the pages once. He checks them on the schedule you set.
  • The post leads with what changed since last week, not everything he read.
  • Every number cites the page it came from and the day he read it.
  • He reads public pages only and sends nothing outside the team.

One price up, one free plan.

Two changes since last Monday. Hollis raised its Team plan from $12 to $15 per seat, and the annual discount dropped from 20% to 15%, read on its pricing page this morning. Brightline added a free plan for up to 3 users, announced in its changelog on Thursday. Northwind and Beacon haven't changed. The tracker page is updated.

Set it up

  1. 01

    Add Cedric to Slack

Install him and invite him to the channel where the news should land. You start with 100,000 free credits, about $50 of work, and no card.

    Create your Cedric account

  2. 02

    Name who to watch

"Watch the pricing and changelog pages of Hollis, Brightline, Northwind and Beacon." Paste the links if a page is hard to find.

  3. 03

    Put it on a schedule

"Every Monday at 8, tell me what changed on those pages since last week. Say nothing if nothing moved."

The first scheduled run asks before it starts. After that, the schedule is the standing yes.

  4. 04

    Keep a tracker page

"Keep a Notion page with each competitor's current plans and prices." He refreshes it on every run, so today's prices are one link away.

What to watch besides the price

The pricing page. Plan names, the price per seat, what each tier includes, the annual discount. A feature moving down a tier often says more than a price change.

The changelog. What they shipped this week. Three releases in a row on the same feature tell you where they're heading.

The careers page. Seven engineering roles at a 23-person company is a plan.

The docs. Limits and quotas often change in the help center before anyone touches the pricing page.

Pick the two or three that matter in your market. A watch on everything turns into a weekly wall of text that nobody reads.

Know the limits

Public pages only. He reads what anyone can open. A price behind a sales call or a login is out of reach, and he says so rather than guessing.

One reading of the page. Some companies show different prices by country or currency. Check those yourself before you quote them.

Nothing leaves the team. He reads their pages and writes to your channel and your tracker. He contacts no one.

FAQ

Yes. A competitor's pricing page or blog, checked on a schedule, with a note in the channel when something moves.

No. If a figure isn't on the page, he says so. Every number in the post cites where and when he read it.

Yes. "What does Beacon charge for 20 seats?" He reads the page when you ask and answers with the source.
